FAQ

Getting Started
How does Zoom dog training actually work?
Zoom allows us to work together in real time while you’re with your dog in your own environment. I guide you step-by-step, help you read your dog’s behavior, and adjust in the moment. Many dogs focus better at home, and you get to learn how to truly see what your dog is communicating.

Do I need any experience before starting?
No experience is needed. We start exactly where you and your dog are today. My job is to help you build understanding, timing, and confidence one step at a time—without pressure or overwhelm.

What kinds of dogs do you work with?
I work with puppies, adult dogs, and dogs at all learning stages. All breeds can enjoy K9 Nose Work®, including those people often assume may not be a fit for scent work; like sighthounds and French Bulldogs. In practice, many of these dogs not only participate, but truly excel.
Whether you’re just getting started or building skills for sport or everyday life, we work from your dog’s natural strengths, curiosity, and ability to learn.

Is Zoom training actually effective for dogs? Yes, many dogs learn more clearly at home where they’re comfortable and focused. Zoom allows me to coach you in real time, which is what creates lasting change in your dog’s behavior and understanding.
Training Options and Pathways
What can I train with you?
You can choose from several pathways depending on your goals:
  • K9 Nose Work® for scent detection and confidence building
  • AKC sport training and titling
  • Puppy foundations and early learning
  • Everyday life skills for focus, manners, and connection
Each path is flexible and tailored to you and your dog.

How do I know which program is right for me?
You don’t have to figure that out alone. We’ll talk through your goals, your dog’s personality, and what feels realistic for your lifestyle. Many teams start in one area and naturally grow into others over time.

Can I switch or combine training paths later?
Yes. Dogs—and people—change as they learn. Your training plan can evolve as your dog gains skills, confidence, and motivation. Flexibility is built into the process.
Logistics and Practical Questions
Do I need special equipment for Zoom training?
Most sessions require very little—often just your dog, treats or rewards, and a simple setup like a phone or laptop. If anything specific is needed for your chosen training path, I’ll guide you ahead of time.

How long are sessions and how often do we meet?
Session length and frequency depend on your goals and your dog’s learning style. We’ll build a rhythm that supports steady progress without overwhelming you or your dog.
Most private lessons are 30–40 minutes. This gives us time to review video if needed, work in real time, talk through what you’re seeing, and plan clear next steps.
Shorter sessions tend to be more effective for many dogs, helping them stay focused, engaged, and confident as they learn.

What if my dog gets distracted during Zoom sessions?
That’s completely normal, and actually part of the learning process. I’ll help you adjust the environment and your timing so your dog can succeed. We work with real-life moments, not perfect conditions.
